The Hobbit releases eighth TV spot: watch now
Nov 30th 2012, 16:37

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has loosed a new TV spot onto the internet. The eighth in a series of half-minute teasers begins by reminding us where the franchise started, with an elderly Bilbo (Ian Holm), as we saw him in Lord Of The Rings, offering to tell Elijah Wood’s Frodo about his adventures. From here on we see a youthful Mr Baggins (played by a pitch-perfect Martin Freeman) muddle his way through battles with fearsome trolls, ravenous wolves and everyone’s favourite ring fiend, Gollum (Andy Serkis). While it offers nothing in the way of new surprises, it still managed to get our pulses racing with anticipation. Watch the new spot below:

The awesome final shot of Gandalf (Ian McKellen) leaping, sword-in-hand, at the camera with wizened fury, feels like a premonition of how wait-weary fans will storm the box office on release day. To paraphrase Boromir in The Fellowship Of The Ring, after eight, long, hobbit-less years, one does not simply walk into the multiplex. Directed by Peter Jackson and co-starring Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen and Hugo Weaving, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will open in the UK on 13 December 2012.

And don’t forget, the issue is available as our incredible interactive iPad edition for just £1.99. Total Film News: Seth MacFarlane talks Family Guy movie

Seth MacFarlane talks Family Guy movie
Nov 30th 2012, 18:12

Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane has confirmed that a movie outing for the foul-mouthed, animated TV family is currently in the works. Probed by a classroom of UCLA students - at an event to publicise a contest that gives university attendees the chance to join him on stage when he hosts the Oscars next year - he admitted, “It’s just a matter of when”. Since it began in 1999, MacFarlane’s animated sitcom has often been accused of lifting the format laid-out by The Simpsons, which finally hit the big screen after almost 20 years on the air in 2007. But, when it comes to the move to celluloid, Macfarlane wants to learn from his predecessor’s mistakes. “The Simpsons Movie, I thought, was hilarious, but the one criticism I would have is that it’s a story they probably could’ve done on TV”, he said. “That’s the challenge with animation. You pretty much can do any story you want, so what is the reason for the movie? We finally hit on the answer to that question, and it will be something that would be impossible to do on TV.” Trying not to give too much away, a coy Macfarlane added, “I can’t tell you what that this”. So what, the mind wonders, could “that” be? Despite constantly being harangued by petitions from the easily offended calling for the show to be dropped from the schedules, Family Guy has built its huge fan base on no-holds-barred crudity. Does Macfarlane plan to go even further? What depths of sick-joke depravity will Family Guy: The Movie unleash? Only time will tell. But one thing’s for certain - it’s sure to be a massive hit. MacFarlane’s 2012 directorial debut, Ted, was a summer box office smash. But choosing to affect the same Bostonian brogue for his pothead teddy bear as he usually does for Family Guy patriarch Peter Griffin, only reminded fans of the animated movie that wasn’t. A filmic Family Guy romp could make the $200m-odd Ted made look like chump change.

Christopher Nolan considered casting Heath Ledger as Batman
Nov 30th 2012, 12:02

Christopher Nolan may be done telling Baman stories on the big screen, but apparently he has plenty more stories to tell about making the films themselves. While talking at a Lincoln Centre Q&A in New York City this week (via Hitfix), the director revealed that he originally considered casting Heath Ledger as The Bat in Batman Begins. When Nolan met with Ledger, though, the actor politely declined - and told him he’d never be in a comic-book movie. Fast forward a few years and Ledger was so impressed with what Nolan did with 2005’s Batman Begins that he agreed to meet to talk about The Dark Knight. “He didn’t like to work too much,” Nolan explains of the actor. “He liked to do a character and then stop working and let enough time go by until he was hungry for it again. “And that’s what happened when he came in; he was really ready to do something like that.”

Though we obviously can't imagine anybody else playing The Joker or Batman in Nolan's film, we're sure Ledger would have made a fantastic Bat. If only we had a screen test to pore over...

Mike and Sully reunite on new Monsters University poster
Nov 30th 2012, 12:04

A new poster for Monsters University has been released online, and shows everybody’s favourite two scarers looking cool in their uni blazers. In fact, Pixar is so confident people know the brand by now that they don’t even put the title on the poster - just the abbreviated ‘MU’, replete with single monster eye. It’s a clean, confident one-sheet that isn’t afraid to have a few more laughs at Mike’s expense - the one-eyed greenie forced to stand on a pile of books to have his photo taken. Take a look below…

Set before the events of Monsters Inc., MU follows Mike (Billy Crystal) and Sully (John Goodman) as they go through scare school. When they’re kicked out, they join a fraternity called Oozma Kappa, which promises all kinds of Revenge Of The Nerds-style hilarity. Monsters University opens in UK cinemas on 12 July 2013.
