Michael Bay talks about his decision to direct Transformers 4

Having previously pronounced Dark Of The Moon to be his last Transformers outing, Michael Bay recently performed a total U-turn, signing on to direct Transformers 4, which had initially been described as a series reboot. Bay recently spoke to The Huffington Post about his change of heart, and went on to reveal that the film will continue the existing story, rather than starting over afresh. “I thought I was done,” says Bay. “Then the ride came out [at Universal Studios Hollywood] and the two-and-a-half-hour lines. And then you’re thinking, Oh my God, someone’s going to take this over. And you start doing a lot of soul-searching. The studio says they want to restart the franchise, And someone could come in here and screw it up, you know?” “So I’m thinking that if I do this last one, we set it on a new footing, we change a lot of things - but we keep the history of the three in place. But we broaden it so it can be set up and be carried on - it would have a better chance for survival, I guess.” And as for how the film will take shape? Well, apparently it isn’t a reboot. “We’re basically taking from the history of where it was,” explains Bay. “Or where we left it in Chicago. And we’re going to carry it on from there.” Basically, as long as there are things to be blown up, Michael Bay will be around to light the blue touch-paper. Transformers 4 opens in the UK on 27 June 2014.
