Watch the short film that inspired Guillermo del Toro's Mama
Dec 31st 2012, 09:46

In February 2013, Mama – the latest horror film produced by movie-making machine Guillermo del Toro, starring Jessica Chastain – will debut in UK cinemas.

Now the creepy short film that inspired the feature has been released online, replete with an introduction by del Toro himself.

Sharing the feature’s title, Mama is a three-minute short in which two girls are haunted by the eponymous figure – a spindly nightmare with a serious case of rigor mortis.

“The short was one of the scariest little scenes I’ve ever seen,” del Toro says. “It was also incredibly well made, very claustrophobic, really, really scary.”

Check it out for yourself below…

Still with us? Filmed in what looks like a single take, this short definitely has its scares in the right places.

The feature version stars Jessica Chastain as the foster mother of two young girls who were found living in the woods after their parents’ deaths.

If director Andres Muschietti can match the spine-tingling chills of his short in his cinematic version, we’re in for a really scary time.

Mama opens in cinemas on 22 February 2013.

First full trailer for Dead Man Down released: watch now
Dec 31st 2012, 09:12

The first full trailer for psychological thriller Dead Man Down has been released online, and promises a glut of action spills.

Directed by Niels Arden Oplev, it sees the Danish filmmaker reunite with his Girl With The Dragon Tattoo star Noomi Rapace.

She hires Colin Farell’s professional killer to take out Terrence Howard, a man who once violently maimed her.

Check out the trailer below…

Filled with slow-mo action shots and what looks like a deliciously oily turn from Howard, Oplev’s first English-language film doesn’t seem to be breaking any thriller moulds.

It does look to be a fairly straightforward – and solid – revenge thriller, though, with Rapace and Farell on top form.

Only time will tell if it’s able to match The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo for gritty kicks.

Dead Man Down opens in the US on 8 March 2013. It has yet to receive a UK release date.

Skyfall crosses the $1bn mark at the worldwide box office
Dec 31st 2012, 09:28

James Bond’s latest big screen outing has earned itself a prestigious place amongst some of the highest-grossing films ever made.

Not content with simply setting records in the UK (where it became the highest grossing film ever with a current total of £100m), Skyfall has now made a total of $1bn at the worldwide box office.

Which isn’t bad for a film that looked like it might never happen, thanks to the MGM financial crisis.

In November 2012, Skyfall passed $500m at the worldwide box office, which now looks like mere coppers when compared with its current impressive haul.

The upshot of that massive monetary grab is that Skyfall now sits amongst esteemed company as one of just 14 films to pass the $1bn mark – others include Avengers Assemble, Avatar, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2 and The Dark Knight Rises.

Bond, we’re raising a martini in your honour.

Quentin Tarantino talks Inglourious Basterds spin-off Killer Crow
Dec 28th 2012, 09:26

With Django Unchained set to hit UK screens in a matter of weeks, Quentin Tarantino has been talking about another period drama he’s got on the boil, in the form of Inglourious Basterds spin-off, Killer Crow.

“My original idea for Inglourious Basterds way back when,” explains QT, “was that this [would be] a huge story that included the [smaller] story that you saw in the film, but also followed a bunch of black troops, and they had been fucked over by the American military and kind of go apeshit.”

“The black troops go on an Apache warpath and kill a bunch of white soldiers and white officers on a military base and are just making a warpath to Switzerland. So that was always going to be part of it, and I was going to do it as a miniseries, and that was going to be one of the big storylines.”

“When I decided to try to turn it into a movie, that was a section I had to take out to help tame my material. I have most of that written. It’s ready to go; I just have to write the second half of it…That would be the third of the trilogy. It would be called Killer Crow or something like that.”

Meanwhile, the next part of the “trilogy”, Django Unchained, will be arriving in UK cinemas on 18 January 2013.

New image from Pacific Rim
Dec 28th 2012, 09:37

A new image has been released from Guillermo Del Toro’s sci-fi epic, Pacific Rim, and oddly enough, it contains neither aliens nor giant robots.

Instead, the new image is a rather sober shot of Idris Elba conversing with Rinko Kikuchi against a backdrop of some sort of centre of operations.

The film finds Earth in deadly peril, when a race of bizarre aliens known as “Kaiju” pitch up on our fair planet and start throwing their weight around. A lethal invading force, it isn’t long before they’ve all but taken over the planet.

However, humanity does have one last throw of the dice in the form of an army of giant robots, controlled and piloted by a crack unit of military forces. Take that, aliens!

Directed by Del Toro and co-starring Charlie Hunnam, Ron Perlman and Charlie Day, Pacific Rim will open in the UK on 12 July 2013.

First four minutes of Warm Bodies arrives online: watch now
Dec 28th 2012, 09:56

The first four minutes of Jonathan Levine’s Rom-Zom-Com, Warm Bodies, has arrived online, featuring Nicholas Hoult talking us through life as a zombie.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world where the majority of the population are zombies, the film swiftly brushes aside how exactly it all happened (“could’ve been a radioactive Outbreak monkey” supposes Hoult) in order to focus in on the plight of our hero, R.

He can’t remember much of his old life you see, but when he stumbles across the girlfriend of one of his victims, some of his old human feelings come rushing back to the surface. Could a zombie be rehabilitated after all?

Take a look, below…

From the looks of this opening scene, it looks as though Levine has found a fresh and witty take on an increasingly hackneyed genre, with Hoult making for an extremely likeable lead. And there's also a pleasing amount of gore to boot...

Co-starring Rob Corddry, Teresa Palmer, Analeigh Tipton and John Malkovich, Warm Bodies opens in the UK on 8 February 2013.
