Looper, a late entrant in the 'coolest movie of the year' stakes, fronts this month’s brand new issue of Total Film magazine (out tomorrow!), and inside we chat to director Rian Johnson and star Joseph Gordon-Levitt. In case you don’t already know, Looper’s a gritty, grubby sci-fi, set a few decades from now. In the 2040s, Joe (Gordon-Levitt) is a hitman who whacks targets sent back in time from 30 years in the future, despatching them before disposing of the evidence (which, conveniently, the contemporary authorities won’t be looking for). Joe’s enjoying the spoils of his well-paid lifestyle, until he’s tasked with offing his future self (played by Bruce Willis) and ‘closing the loop’.

It’s one of an all-too-rare breed of thriller that melds brain-testing concepts with all-out thrills, decorating the whole thing with neat sci-fi touches that enhance instead of overwhelming, adding texture rather than greenscreen sheen. You can’t rhapsodise for long on the topic of brainy blockbusters without one name coming up: Christopher Nolan. So it’s not surprising that during the course of our discussions with Gordon-Levitt, his Inception and Dark Knight Rises director was mentioned. On the tendency in mainstream cinema to talk down to the audience, Gordon-Levitt told us, “You can point at the work of Chris Nolan - he doesn’t talk down to the audience at all, and audiences love him for it. Rian isn’t interested in talking down to his audience. He’s interested in making a movie that he would love - making them clear, and making them well.” Johnson also spoke about Nolan’s trailblazing influence: “I love the fact he’s obliterated this false notion that huge movies can’t also be interesting - that you either have to have something on your mind or you can make a big fun movie.” Looper opens on 28 September 2012. For more from Johnson, Gordon-Levitt and Emily Blunt on Looper, pick up the latest issue of Total Film magazine, which is out now (and comes with four incredible free posters!)
