New clip from The Master arrives online: watch now

The Master has released a brand new clip online, and it's probably the most obscure of the bunch as a desperate Joaquin Phoenix runs down to an abandoned pier claiming, "I lost my ship". When he arrives there he is confronted by a pair of naval officers who instruct him to "go down to Pier 39". That's about all that happens, but Phoenix's rhythmic, ragged breathing adds an air of the deranged to proceedings that can't help but unsettle the viewer. In addition to that it's worth noting that the cinematography is absolutely wonderful, with early morning San Francisco looking utterly gorgeous as the sun gradually begins to rise. Take a look at the new clip, below… We've noted on a couple of occasions that Phoenix looks to have hit a home run with this one, and Paul Thomas Anderson has been quick to praise the abilities of his leading man. "At a certain point, Joaquin is just incapable of faking it," he says. "He’s like Daniel [Day-Lewis], his level of concentration. He just got in character and stayed there — for three months he didn’t stop. Joaquin is very unpredictable. A lot of the time I didn’t know what he was going to do." When it was put to Anderson that his new film shares a thematic construct with his previous two outings (that being the creation of a makeshift family, in this case between Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams' cult leaders) , the director responded in self-deprecating fashion. "I know, it’s the same thing again. No matter how hard I try to set out to do something different. I wish I would have more diversity as a filmmaker." Somehow, we've a feeling he's doing himself down a little. The Master opens in the UK on 9 November 2012.
