Exclusive clip from Oscar-nominated drama No: watch now
Jan 31st 2013, 17:39

Fans of Gael García Bernal and/or advertising rejoice, because we’ve gotten our hands on an intriguing new clip from Chilean drama, No.

Starring García Bernal as an advertising hotshot in ‘80s Chile, No focuses on the stranger-than-fiction fight to remove General Augusto Pinochet from power.

René Saavedra made headlines in 1988 when he used advertising techniques for political broadcasts, aiming to get the public voting for a resounding ‘No’ for Pinochet. Meanwhile, his boss and rival beavered away on the ‘Yes’ campaign.

Directed by Pablo Larraín (Tony Manero, Post Mortem), the film is Chile’s official entry in the Foreign Language category at the 2013 Oscars.

No drew acclaim for its period detail and fresh take on a potentially heavy subject matter when it was shown at Cannes earlier this year. Mad Men comparisons were even bandied about.

And as you can see from the exclusive clip below, Larraín opted to further enhance the vintage feel by utilising lo-def magnetic tapes.

The scene in question sees García Bernal distracting himself with toy trains when one of his final campaigns - fronted by some big-name Hollywood stars - airs on TV.

Watch the clip below:

No opens in the UK on 8 February 2013.

Disney releases Oscar-nominated Paperman online: watch now
Jan 31st 2013, 11:32

A treat for fans of animated filmmaking has landed online, with Disney’s Oscar-nominated short Paperman now available to watch in full.
Directed by John Kahrs the film blends traditional 2D animation with computer-generated imagery to eye-pleasing effect. It really is gorgeous to look at. The short tells the story of a lonely young man living in mid-20th Century New York who meets a beautiful stranger during his morning commute to work. Expecting never to see her again, he is stunned to find that she works in the office across the street from his. And with only a stack of paper to work with, he sets about trying to gain her attention. Take a look at the short below:
Rather lovely, isn’t it? You can find out whether Kahrs’ film scoops an Academy Award when the gongs are handed out on 24 February 2013.

Ashton Kutcher releases Steve Jobs comparison image
Jan 31st 2013, 11:39

Ashton Kutcher celebrated the release of jOBS at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival by unveiling an image comparing himself in-character with the real Steve Jobs.

In fairness to the Two And A Half Men star, the resemblance is rather uncanny. From the first official image of Kutcher as Jobs, it was evident that the physical likeness wouldn’t be a problem.

When TF was in Sundance, we thought Kutcher nailed the Apple-man’s mannerisms and gestures, but we were less convinced by his dramatic chops.

Read our full Sundance 2013 reaction to jOBS.

And check out that full image of Kutcher/Jobs below:

Conveniently, a video of a young Jobs explaining how he founded Apple has gone viral on reddit, with one user suggesting that it explains the seemingly bizarre casting decision.

Give it a watch and tell us what you think:

jOBS opens in the US on 19 April 2013, with a UK release date yet to be confirmed.

Total Film News: Kathleen Kennedy talks J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars appointment

Kathleen Kennedy talks J.J. Abrams' Star Wars appointment
Jan 31st 2013, 09:42

J.J. Abrams’ unveiling as the new Star Wars director came as something of a surprise given the filmmaker’s furious denials that any such deal could come about, but Kathleen Kennedy has spilled the beans on just how she managed to persuade him to take the gig.

Abrams had publicly stated that he would rather remain a fan of the Star Wars series, but when Kennedy made her approach, Abrams was apparently swayed by the fact that screenwriter Michael Arndt and producer Lawrence Kasdan were already involved.

“J.J. was flipping out when he found out that Michael and Larry were on the movie already,” says Kennedy of the three-hour meeting that took place in secret back in December. “J.J. was just on the ceiling when I walked out the door.”

However, there were still fears concerning his other commitments to allay, and so Kennedy turned to her ace-card: the ability to play on a fanboy’s love for the series.

“We spent a lot of time talking about how meaningful Star Wars is and the depth of the mythology that George has created and how we carry that into the next chapter,” says Kennedy. Not that she was being cynical about it, or anything…

However, the proposed 2015 release date is thought to have been a sticking point with Abrams, and it sounds as though the director may have got his own way on that score.

“Our goal is to move as quickly as we can, and we'll see what happens," says Kennedy. “The timetable we care about is getting the story.” Watch this space…

Tony Stark is in freefall in new Iron Man 3 poster
Jan 31st 2013, 07:32

A new poster has arrived online for Iron Man 3, featuring old Shellhead looking distinctly the worse for wear after his latest bout of combat.

The poster shows Stark hurtling towards Earth, seemingly in freefall, with his suit in a serious state of disrepair. Looks as though whoever he was fighting, he’s come off second best.

This new image tallies with what we know about the movie so far, in that it will find Stark in an increasingly lonely place, with his enemies pushing him to breaking point.

As Kevin Feige suggested recently, the suit has increasingly become a crutch that Stark cannot do without. However, judging by the state of it here, he may soon have to…

Directed by Shane Black and starring Robert Downey Jr., Ben Kingsley and Don Cheadle, Iron Man 3 will open in the UK on 3 May 2013. In the meantime, you can check out the poster in full, below…

Screenwriter talks Blade Runner sequel
Jan 31st 2013, 07:18

When it was revealed that Ridley Scott had been working on a Blade Runner sequel for the last couple of years, there was understandably much excitement, with plenty of speculation as to when the film might see the light of day.

Among all the speculation was the suggestion that screenwriter Scott Z. Burns might be in the process of writing a script. That rumour was eventually shot down, but Burns himself has been talking about the project, and suggests that his involvement is still very much alive.

“I talked to Ridley about it at one point as a part of a larger conversation about us trying to find something to do together because I have such admiration for him,” explains Burns.

“I’m as huge a fan of that movie as anybody else who would be reading this or watching it, so what I said to him was, ‘Let’s not do that unless we have something amazing to do or to say, because I don’t want to touch that idea unless I really feel like I have something amazing to contribute and right now I don’t know what that is.”

“I think he and I will probably talk again about it,” continues Burns. “But again it’s less about that specifically and more about he and I wanting to make a science fiction movie together.”

“So I hope that that happens, to me I’m not particularly attached to it being Blade Runner.  I suspect by the time we would come up with something it would be its own thing and not attached to that franchise necessarily, because it is a franchise, it’s a great piece of work.”

Expect the rumours to run and run on this one…

Duncan Jones will direct World Of Warcraft adaptation
Jan 31st 2013, 07:44

Duncan Jones is set to make geek dreams come true, with the sci-fi director having been given the go-ahead from Warner to helm their forthcoming World Of Warcraft adaptation.

One of the most popular computer games of all time, Warner has been attempting to adapt the open-ended fantasy for some time, with Sam Raimi initially attached to direct before eventually dropping out.

“The gauntlet was thrown down ages ago,” commented Jones on Twitter. “Can you make a proper MOVIE of a video game. I’ve always said it’s possible. Got to DO it now! ;)”

Jones is thought to be receiving a $100 million budget to make this one happen, representing a significant step up in scale for the director. A script is also in existence, with the latest version having been written by Charles Leavitt.

No casting has been announced as yet, although Hollywood whispers are linking Johnny Depp to the starring role. Producers Thomas Tull and John Jashni are keen on an autumn  start date, so we should hear more sooner rather than later…
