Stephen King short story Gramma to be adapted by Universal

Universal Pictures has teamed with horror producer Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions (Insidious, Sinister, Paranormal Activity 4) to create the feature length horror tale Mercy as an adaptation of Stephen King’s Gramma, which was published as part of his 1985 short story anthology, Skeleton Crew. King’s story depicts a harrowing tale as a mother and her two sons take care of their elderly, cantankerous grandmother after she falls ill.

When the youngest sibling is left alone to care for “Gramma”, he discovers a dark and horrifying secret buried within her past. It’s not yet clear how closely the adaptation will stick to the original text. The Haunting In Connecticut director Peter Cornwell is at the helm, bringing movie life to the short story.

Cornwell will work with a script penned by Matt Greenberg, who coincidentally adapted King’s other horror short, 1408, into a feature length film of the same name. Sources have suggested that Cornwell has tapped British actress Frances O’Connor (A.I. Artificial Intelligence and Timeline) to star in the project, but her exact role in the film is yet to be announced. More on this one as we get it.
