New trailer for Pacific Rim: watch now Jan 8th 2013, 08:18 A new trailer has landed online for Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, as a giant robot lays the smack down on a marauding extra-terrestrial monster. The new film sees a futuristic earth besieged by a race of beasties known as the Kaiju, who have sprung from an inter-dimensional portal opened by a shifting fault beneath the Pacific Ocean. Fortunately, mankind won’t go quietly, and has pioneered the Jaeger programme – the creation of a series of giant robots, piloted by neurologically-linked soldiers, designed to fight off the invaders. Take a look, below… There’s not much on show here in the way of character development, but in terms of showing off the film’s remarkable VFX and creating a sense of the sheer scale of the fight sequences, it does the job very nicely indeed. Directed by del Toro and co-starring Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi, Pacific Rim opens in the UK on 12 July 2013.
